Honda Prelude

Model Overview

The Honda Prelude is a two-door, four-seater hybrid sports coupe officially revived by Honda in September 2025. Its lineage traces back to 1978 and, after spanning five generations, ceased production in 2001. Now, after a 24-year hiatus, it makes a comeback as a sixth-generation model. Built on the Civic platform and infused with the high-performance chassis DNA of the Civic Type R, the all-new Prelude is powered by a 2.0L e:HEV petrol-electric hybrid system. Positioned as a "premium, high-performance boutique street coupe", it strikes a fine balance between pure driving pleasure and daily usability. The car officially went on sale in Japan in September 2025 with a starting price of JPY 6,179,800 (approx. RM305,000), is slated to arrive in the US market in late autumn of the same year, and is expected to debut in Taiwan, China by year-end.

Design Language

The all-new Prelude takes styling inspiration from a "glider", adhering to a core design ethos of a "low, sharp front fascia + sleek body profile", projecting an athletic aesthetic with its low-slung, wide-body stance. Up front, it features deep-set LED headlamp clusters and a gloss black front splitter, while laser brazing on the roof eliminates conventional roof mouldings. Paired with flush pop-out door handles (which deploy automatically upon approach) and blue bumper trim accents, it delivers a clean, high-tech visual profile. In terms of dimensions, it measures 4,520 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width, and 1,355 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,605 mm, making it slightly shorter, narrower, and lower overall than the Civic Type R. Round back, it sports a full-width LED taillight bar and a segmented bootlid spoiler, with "Honda" and "Prelude" badging set in the centre.

Inside, the cabin adopts an "asymmetrical twin-cockpit layout"—with the driver's seat offering reinforced bolstering for spirited driving, and the front passenger seat prioritising plush, wrapped-around comfort. The interior carries over the brand's latest design language, featuring a 10.2-inch full digital instrument cluster and a 9-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system (with Google built-in), complemented by a flat-bottom sports steering wheel and honeycomb air-con vents. The cabin's primary colour scheme blends white and dark blue, accented by an embroidered Prelude script ahead of the front passenger. It features a 2+2 seating configuration with 60:40 split-folding rear seats, paired with a liftback tailgate design for added practicality.

Powertrain & Performance

Under the bonnet, the Prelude is powered by a hybrid powertrain pairing a 2.0-litre inline-four naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle engine (shared with the Civic e:HEV) with dual electric motors. The system delivers a combined maximum output of 203 hp (approx. 184 PS) and 315 Nm of peak torque, returning an impressive WLTC-rated fuel economy of 23.6 km/L (approx. 4.2 L/100 km).

A standout highlight is the S+ Shift simulated gear shift system, which mimics an 8-speed transmission via steering wheel paddle shifters. Coordinated with Active Sound Control (piping simulated engine notes through the cabin speakers) and dynamic rev-counter graphics, it delivers driver engagement on par with conventional petrol cars. Drivers can choose from four driving modes: Comfort, GT, Sport, and Individual.

Chassis & Handling

The Prelude adopts a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout, riding on a chassis developed from the Civic Type R's dual-axis strut front suspension, which significantly reduces torque steer while sharpening turn-in response. The rear features a multi-link suspension setup paired with an Adaptive Damper System that adjusts damping firmness in real time. A widened track further improves high-speed cornering stability.

Stopping power is handled by a Brembo front braking system, featuring 13.8-inch two-piece brake discs with blue four-piston calipers, complemented by 12.0-inch ventilated discs at the rear to ensure fade-free braking under hard driving. It rides on 235/40 R19 tyres wrapped around 19-inch black alloy wheels as standard.

Cabin & Equipment

The Prelude features a 2+2 seating layout, equipped with front sports seats trimmed in houndstooth fabric upholstery, heated functions, and Prelude branding embossed on the headrests. The 60:40 split-folding rear seats expand luggage space when needed, while the boot floor features hidden storage compartments and utility hooks. On the creature comforts front, standard kit includes dual-zone automatic climate control, a wireless smartphone charger, and a Bose 8-speaker sound system (incorporating Super65 wide-band speakers and an independent subwoofer).

Safety & Advanced Driver Assistance

The Prelude comes standard across the range with the Honda Sensing active safety suite, featuring 12 safety functions including Collision Mitigation Braking System (with pedestrian detection), Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist System, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Information System, and Traffic Sign Recognition. It is also equipped with a Post-Collision Braking System to mitigate secondary impacts following an accident.

Market Performance & Reception

Following its domestic debut in Japan in September 2025, the Prelude racked up around 2,400 orders in its first full sales month, outperforming its monthly target by over eightfold to a stellar market reception. However, with an asking price of JPY 6,179,800, it sits higher than the Civic Type R (JPY 4,997,300) in Japan, making it one of the priciest production models in Honda’s domestic line-up. In North America, the coupe is slated to arrive in late autumn 2025, offered in a single, fully-loaded grade.

Automotive media noted that the Prelude’s revival hits the sweet spot for the niche coupe segment, as its e:HEV powertrain delivers 200 hp-class punch while returning stellar fuel economy, with the S+ Shift function keeping the old-school driving thrill alive in the electrified era. However, industry observers pointed out that pricing it above the Civic Type R could cap its overall sales potential. In Taiwan, China, the car is expected to make its public debut at the Taipei Auto Show towards the end of the year.
